On Iliazd’s Poésie de mots inconnus in the Nikolai Khardzhiev Library
A Hidden Dedication traces the history of Poésie de mots inconnus (1949), an influential anthology of avant-garde sound and visual poetry, discovered in the library of collector and scholar Nikolai Khardzhiev (1903–1996). The book was published in Paris by artist, writer, and publisher Iliazd (Ilia Zdanevich, 1894–1975). Combining archival research, object biography, and close material analysis, the essay explores how artists’ books can illuminate networks of exchange, cultural migration, and the layered histories that remain embedded in collections.
